The most striking and evident part of a person is his speaking – through his speaking he expresses himself and he releases what is inside of him. For the church as the one new man, we all believers in Christ need to take Christ as our person especially in the matter of speaking.
Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matt. 12:34-37), and we speak from what we have within us.
In Eph. 2:15 we see the one new man, in Romans 15:6 we are encouraged to speak with one mouth, and in 1 Cor. 1:10 we need to speak the same thing. Christ as a Person speaks only one thing with one mouth.
If we take Christ as our person, especially in the matter of our speaking, we will speak the same thing that Christ speaks, and we will speak with one mouth. There is only one new man, and this one new man has only one person with one mouth speaking the same thing.
Many times we speak a lot of things from ourselves, not from the Lord, and we bring in confusion both in our life and in the church life. But we need to realize that in the Body of Christ as the new man we cannot “speak our own thing”.
Even more, we don’t even have “freedom of speech”. How can my mouth speak one thing, while my hand wants to speak something different? In the new man there is only one person with one mouth speaking the same thing.
When we take Christ as our person in the matter of speaking, we will be one with all the saints on the earth in the one new man, and we will speak with one mouth the same thing.
This is the greatest wonder in the world today, that millions of believers would speak the same thing with one mouth. This is a glory to God and a shame to the enemy, who brings in confusion, division, and different speaking!
Taking Christ as our Person in the Matter of Speaking
One of the reasons the Lord Jesus is rejected and misunderstood in the world is because the believers in Christ have different speakings, each speaking their own thing.
The many denominations and sects in Christianity each speaks “their own thing”, and there are very few who can actually be one with the Lord to speak the same thing as He does with one mouth. How can all the Christians speak the same thing, as 1 Cor. 1:10 tells us?
We need to realize that it is the person that controls the speaking and issues in the speaking. If we take Christ as our person, Christ in us will speak the same thing, thus dispelling any confusion and division.
For the church as the one new man, we all need to take Christ as our person in the matter of speaking. We need to let Him make His home in our heart and fill our heart with good things, with Himself as the many good and wonderful things, and then we will speak the same thing (Eph. 3:17; Matt. 12:34-37).
The Lord Jesus didn’t speak from Himself – He spoke as He heard from the Father, and the works He did were the Father’s works (see John 7:16-18; 8:28, 38a; 12:49-50; 14:10).
Speaking is a very common thing in our daily life, and every day we speak – many times we speak quite a lot. How do we take care of our speaking in the light of the one new man, where Christ is the person? Because “we’re full of it inside”, we speak, and something comes out.
Sometimes we speak when we’re not supposed to speak, while at other times we don’t speak at all – and we should speak. We need to stop and take Christ as our person when we are about to speak, especially in the church life.
Check with yourself from time to time, Is it me who is speaking, or is it Christ? Is Christ my person as I am speaking, or is it still me? If we take Christ as our person in the matter of speaking, we will speak the same thing with one mouth!
With One Mouth Speaking the Same Thing
We need to consider “one mouth” in Rom. 15:6 together with “speak the same thing” in 1 Cor. 1:10 and with “one new man” in Eph. 2:15. How can all the saints in the church life speak the same thing? How can millions of believers speak the same thing with one mouth?
If we each one live out our own person, not taking Christ as our person, there will be a different speaking. But if we see that Christ is our person, and if we take Christ as our person in the matter of speaking, there will be no more opinions, ideas, thoughts, or speakings – there will be only one speaking with one mouth, and we will speak the same thing!
In the church there is only one Person, and this Person has only one mouth speaking the same thing. So, whose mouth is it? Is it your own mouth, or is it the mouth of the “pastor”, the “reverend”, or the “elder”? No, it is not man’s speaking but it is the Lord’s speaking as the unique Person in the new man.
Even though we are many and we all are speaking, we all should speak the same thing with one mouth. This means that in the church life there’s no “freedom of speech” – you can’t just speak whatever you want. You cannot speak “freely” and you can’t speak “what’s on your mind right now”.
Don’t get me wrong – this doesn’t mean there’s a speech police telling people to not speak. In the church as the one new man we all exercise to take Christ as our person and speak only what He speaks, and this means that our natural man has absolutely no freedom of speech (Matt. 17:5).
Just as Christ didn’t allow Himself to speak things apart from the Father – and He is now living in us, so we need to not allow our natural man to speak things without the Lord. In the new man there’s only one mouth speaking the same thing.
Take a look at the Bible – it is composed of 66 books, it was written by over 40 distinct writers from different backgrounds and cultures, and it was written in over 1500 years – yet the Bible is consistent and definite, speaking the same thing as the word of God!
We need to speak with one accord and with one mouth, speaking the same thing for the glory of God. Christ as the Person inside of us is the One who is speaking, and He will speak the same thing in us as He speaks in all His believers.
We may speak in English while others speak in Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, French, Italian, Polish, Russian, Swedish, Romanian, Slovakian, or other languages and dialects – yet we speak the same thing.
When we speak the same thing with one mouth, God will get the glory and the one new man comes into being. Whenever someone unlearned or an unbeliever then comes among us, he will be convicted by all and exposed by all, and he will see God among us.
Lord Jesus, we want to learn to be attuned in the same mind with the saints in the one new man, and speak the same thing with one mouth! We take You as our person in the matter of speaking! Lord, save us from speaking recklessly or loosely. Save us from speaking our own thing and our own thoughts in the church life. For the new man, we take You as our person with regards to our speaking. Lord, gain thousands and millions of Your believers all over the earth to take You as their person especially in the matter of their speaking! Gain the speaking of the same thing with one mouth in all the local churches!

- Hymns on this topic:
# Oh, Christ in all His glory put on humanity / So He could be my Person, and live instead of me. / A man in life and being, He fully fits my case, / So all His glorious Person can me replace. / O Lord, O Lord, You are the man for me! / I take You as my Person, as my full identity. / O Lord, O Lord, subdue my every part, / And every moment, every place, make home in all my heart.
# When all are sweetly joined / (True followers of the Lamb), / They’re one in heart and mind, / They think and speak the same; / When all in love together dwell; / The comfort is unspeakable!
# Christ our content and reality / To shine out from us unceasingly: / He must have a way in you and me, / He must have a way.
# For this cause Your Person, Lord, / We take and stand in one accord; / All the members self forsake, / And of the Body-Christ partake. / We in Christ as one new man / Now come forth to take this land.
