On the one hand, Christ is our life, and on the other hand, Christ is the Head of the Body, the church. When we were regenerated, we were born of God and Christ became our life – our inward, spiritual, hidden life. Christ is our source – Christ is the source of our life; we cannot do and we should not do anything apart from Him (John 15:5).
We cannot be independent – we depend on the Lord. Even more specifically, we depend on Him and we look to Him as our Head – Christ is both our life and our Head. Here is what Col. 1:18 says about this,
And He is the Head of the Body, the church; He is the beginning, the Firstborn from the dead, that He Himself might have the first place in all things.
God wants Christ to have the first place in all things, and He wants Christ to be Head over everything – starting with Christ being the Head of the Body. If we are to enter and understand what the life of the Body of Christ is, we need to know the authority of the Head, Christ.
No member of the human body does what he wants – he listens and does exactly what the head says. In the same way, in the Body of Christ all the moves of the members of the Body must be under the direction of the Head. How much we need to see this and to live a life in the light of such a revelation!
First of all, for Christ to be the Head of the Body means that He is the only One that has authority in the Body. We don’t have authority and we don’t seek to have authority; we simply submit ourselves to Christ and we are under His authority. Christ being the Head means that we cannot be the head – we are just members of Christ!
We hold Him as the Head and we receive the supply from Him – we grow into the Head in all things. But as it regards to the other members of the Body, since there’s only One Head, Christ, we cannot rule or dictate – we are all under the authority of Christ. He is the One who rules, and He decides our pathway / the course of our life.
The Body’s only duty towards the Head is obedience and submission without any opinion, idea, or proposal. And we do this by loving Him, enjoying Him, and taking Him as our life and our Head! The more we enjoy Christ, the more the divine life in us heads us up – and we spontaneously take Him as our Head and we acknowledge His authority.
Also, taking Christ as the Head means that we repudiate any other heads – Christ is the Unique Head and only Christ is the Head! There cannot be any other heads or rulers in the Body of Christ. We cannot be the head, and no one is “exalted” in the Body – there is no hierarchy and there is no clergy / laity system!
Human plans and human decisions, human ordinances and traditions, they hinder Christ as the Head to rule organically in the Body – we need to repudiate and reject them. Christ was made by God both LORD and Savior (Acts 2:36) – He is first Lord(bringing everything under Himself as the Unique Head over all things) and then Savior.
Today, in the age when even talking about authority is being rejected by everyone, where people are lawless and unsubmissive, we in the church life need to take the lead to be headed up in Christ, taking Him as our Head and our Lord! Once we realize that we are a member in the Body of Christ, we will spontaneously have a feeling of submission towards Christ as the Head, because sumbission is a law of the Body.
We are simply brothers and sisters holding Christ as the head and being submissive to Him as the unique authority in the Body. This all results from us enjoying the Lord daily and checking with Him about everything in our life. He is our life and life supply, and He is also at the same time the Head, the Lord. [enjoyment from the book, The Mystery of Christ, by brother W. Nee, as quoted in the morning revival for today]
Lord, we want to learn to submit to You as the Unique Head of the Body of Christ! Thank You, Lord, for regenerating us with the divine life! Thank You, Lord, for making us members of Christ – Your expression on the earth today! We acknowledge You as the Head, and we repudiate any other heads! We are simply members, Lord, and we hold You as the Head! Thank You Lord for the priviledge of taking the lead to be headed up in You! Head us up today!
Yes Lord. We repudiate every other head and declare and confess you as the Head of the Body. The fullness of the one who fills all and in all.
Yes Lord. We repudiate every other head and declare and confess you as the Head of the Body. The fullness of the one who fills all and in all.
May we submit under the Headship of Christ. He has total authority over us as His Body.
Amen!
Amen….
