Experiencing Jehovah as the Triune God – the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

The Bible reveals that Jehovah – the self-existing and ever-existing One – is the Triune God; He is the unique God, yet He is Triune – He’s the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, which correspond to God the Father, Son, and Spirit.

Many believers and unbelievers alike are confused concerning the Divine Trinity and the Triune God, but the Bible – from beginning to the end – speaks of our God being Triune – we have a Triune God, and this is for our experience and enjoyment.

There are many names of God in the Bible, and they all denote different aspects of His person and work. When God created the heavens and the earth, He was Elohim, the creating and mighty God in His relationship with creation.

When God came to call and fellowship with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, He was both Jehovah and El Shaddai, the God in His relationship with man and the all-sufficient God who promises and supplies His people.

Furthermore, when God came to call Moses and send him to Egypt to deliver His people from the tyranny of Pharaoh, He introduced Himself as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Also, He said that He is the I AM WHO I AM.

What do all these title imply, what do they mean, and how can they be applied to Moses’ situation and to ours today? The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob refers to the Triune God, even the God of resurrection (He’s not the God of the dead but of the living).

The I AM WHO I AM refers to God being the ever-existing and self-existing One, the One who not only promises to His people but who exists and who fulfills His promise.

This is our God: our God is the Triune God for our experience and enjoyment day by day, and He is also the One who IS – He exists forever and ever, and He fulfills all His promises.

We have all God’s promises in the Bible, and we can pray them back to God, firmly believing that He is the I AM, the One who will fulfill His promises. It may not be in our timing or in the way we want it to be, but God will fulfill His promise.

He also makes us promises personally, calling us, giving us direction, and making His way known to us; if we remain one with Him, enjoying Him and trusting Him, He will fulfill His promise to us.

Our God is the Triune God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Resurrecting God

Our God is Jehovah, who is the self-existing and ever-existing One; this One is the Triune God, referred to in Exo. 3 as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Our God is one – He is the unique God, yet He is triune (Mal. 2:10; 1 Cor. 8:4, 6; 2 Cor. 13:14; Matt. 28:19).

The God of Abraham corresponds to God the Father, the God of Isaac to God the Son – Christ, and the God of Jacob to God the Spirit; it is one God, yet He is Triune. Jehovah God is the God of three persons – Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; this implies that He is the Triune God (Exo. 3:14-16).

The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob is Jehovah Elohim – the Triune God, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit (v. 15; Matt. 28:19).

The God of Abraham signifies God the Father who calls man, justifies man, and equips man to live by faith and to live in fellowship with Him (see Gen. 12:1; 15:6; chs. 17—18; 19:29; 21:1-13; 22:1-18). God the Father calls us, justifies us judicially, supplies us, infuses us with faith, and brings us into fellowship with God.

The history of Abraham should be our experience, and the God of Abraham should be our God.

The God of Isaac signifies God the Son who blesses man with the inheritance of all His riches, with a life of enjoyment of His abundance, and with a life in peace (Gen. 25:5; 26:3-4, 12-33).

Our God is the God of blessing, and He is a blessing God; He wants to bless us, make us the heir of His wealth, and give us a life of enjoyment. This is what we also want: we want to enjoy the Lord a little more and live a life of inheriting His riches in rest with peace.

The Lord wants to lead us into unprecedented delight and enjoyment with peace; this is what it means to experience the Triune God as the God of Isaac.

The God of Jacob signifies God the Spirit who works in all things for the good of His people, who are His lovers; He transforms us, and He makes us mature in the divine life (Gen. 27:41; 28:1-35:10).

God the Spirit works in all things for the good of His people, His lovers; all things work together for good to those who love God (Rom. 8:28).

The good that all things work together, under the working of the Spirit, is the gaining more of Christ, having Him wrought into our being, that we may be transformed metabolically and eventually conformed to His image, the image of the firstborn Son of God (v. 29).

God the Spirit works in our environment to transform us and reduce us to nothing, so that Christ may be formed in us and may live in us. On the one hand, we enjoy Christ; on the other, we experience sufferings. Christ ministers all his riches to us, and the Spirit is working to discipline us.

God the Father calls us and supplies us, God the Son infuses His element into us, and God the Spirit disciplines us to transform us and conform us to Christ’s image. Furthermore, Jehovah – the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob – is the God of resurrection, the resurrecting Triune God (Exo. 4:5; Matt. 22:31-32).

Resurrection is not merely an event or a power – resurrection is a Person, the resurrecting Triune God, our God Jehovah.

We can experience His resurrection life and His resurrecting power in any kind of death; when death operates in us or in our environment, we need to contact this One as the resurrecting One, and life will also operate in our being.

Lord, we want to experience You as the Triune God – the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Thank You Father for calling us, justifying us, and equipping us to live by faith and to live in fellowship with God. Thank You Lord Jesus for blessing us with the inheritance of all your riches, with a life of the enjoyment of His abundance, and with a life in peace. Keep us open to You, Lord, as God the Spirit who arranges all things for our good, for us to be transformed and conformed to the image of Christ.

Jesus Christ is the Great I Am – He is Jehovah the Savior, the Infinite, Eternal God!

The Gospel of John reveals that Jesus is the great I am; in verses such as John 8:24, 28, 58, and 18:4-8 we see that Jesus is the I AM. Jesus is not merely a man, and He is not merely God – He is the I AM.

The name Jesus means “Jehovah the Savior” or “the salvation of Jehovah” (Matt. 1:21). In Ezekiel we see the mention of the title, the Lord Jehovah, which in the New Testament has its equivalent in Lord Jesus.

When we call on the name of the Lord, O Lord Jesus!, we call on the I AM, for Jesus is Jehovah the Savior.

The name Jesus includes the name Jehovah, which means “I am who I am” (Exo. 3:14). When we call on His name, He is ready to supply us. Whenever we open our mouth and turn our heart to the Lord, calling on His name, Oh Lord Jesus! He’s there, ready to supply us.

Jesus is Jehovah becoming our Savior and our salvation; He is rich to all those who call on His name (Rom. 10:12-13), and He is able to save us much more in His life (5:10). The fact that Jesus is the great I Am implies that He is the eternal One (John 8:58).

Jesus, a man who is the embodiment of God, is Jehovah, the I AM; His name is I am. When they came to arrest Him in the garden, the Lord asked them, Who are you seeking? They said, Jesus, the Nazarene. To which the Lord replied, I AM; and they fell back.

The One who was arrested in the garden was not merely a Nazarene – He was the great I AM, the infinite God, the eternal God (John 18:4-8). The One whom they arrested was Jehovah God.

When He returns with His overcomers, all He does to defeat His enemy is speak; His being and His speaking will destroy His enemies. Jesus is the self-existing and ever-existing God; He is the complete God, the Triune God (John 14:9-10, 16-18).

Again and again He said in the gospel of John, I am…. – He is everything that we need. He is the complete God and perfect man, the reality of God and man, and as such a One, He is everything to us. Jesus is Jehovah God, the great I am, and he wants us to enjoy Him as such a One in the midst of all our circumstances.

Christ wants us not only to know that He is the great I am, the infinite God becoming a finite man, but to enjoy Him as our everything. He is our grace, endurance, wisdom, health, purity, authority, word, and everything. He is everything to us.

As we enjoy and know Him as the great I am, on the one hand we have Him revealed and wrought into us, and on the other, we are gradually being reduced to nothing, for Christ will be everything to us, and we will become nothing. Hallelujah, Jesus Christ is Jehovah God come in the flesh to be everything to us!

Praise You, Lord Jesus! We want to declare to the whole universe that Jesus Christ is Jehovah God come in the flesh. Jesus Christ, a man, is the great I am, the salvation of Jehovah, Jehovah our Savior, the “I AM WHO I AM”! Thank You Lord, we can experience You as the I am – You are everything to us. You are our salvation, our Savior, our life, our peace, and our joy. Lord Jesus, we believe into You as the great I am, and we want to enjoy You and experience You as the I AM in our daily living!
