We believers in Christ need to build up the habit of drawing water from the springs of salvation in order to drink and flow the water of life; in our daily living we need to drink the Lord habitually, and we need to flow Him out to others also. Amen!
The gospel presented by the Bible is not one of condemnation or accusation; it is a call from God for all those who are thirsty to come to Him and drink the living water.
From eternity to eternity, God is calling to all those who are thirsty to come to Him and drink Him as the living water.
Our God is a flowing God. He flowed from eternity into time, and in time He flowed into a man, the man we call Christ Jesus.
In the Gospel of John in particular we see how Christ came to give those around Him life, even to give them life abundantly (John 10:10).
As He was speaking, teaching, and doing things, He kept calling people to come to Him and drink and eat.
He even said that He gives His flesh to be our real food and His blood to be our real drink. Hallelujah!
In the Old Testament, we see a verse in Jeremiah 2:13 where God rebukes His people for committing two evils: forsaking Him as the fountain of living waters and hewing out cisterns for them, replacements for God, that hold no water.
In John 4 the Lord Jesus was speaking with the Samaritan woman and said that, whoever drinks this water – the physical water and the water that the world has to offer – will thirst again, but he who comes to Him and drinks Him will never thirst again.
God wants to be the fountain of living waters to us; He wants us to partake of His riches and drink of Him at all times.
Actually, God is jealous over us, the believers in Christ, whenever we drink from another source.
He was jealous over His people in the Old Testament, for He wanted them to deeply and continually drink of Him as the fountain of living waters, and He is also jealous over us today.
Even more, for eternity He will flow out as the river of water of life to water and nourish all those in the New Jerusalem.
And at the end of the Bible, in the book of Revelation, almost right at the end of the entire divine revelation, the call is still sounded out, He who is thirsty, let him come to drink!
We human beings are thirsty. We think the things of this world, the activities in society, and the politics will satisfy our hunger, but only God as the fountain of living waters can quench our thirst.
May we be saved from forsaking God as the fountain of living waters and may we keep coming to Him in spirit to drink of Him and flow Him out!
God has become the Springs of Salvation for us to Drink of Him as the Flowing Living Water
In Isa. 12 we see that we can draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation.
There’s a difference between fountains and springs.
In Deut. 8:7 we see that the good land is a land of waterbrooks, of springs and of fountains, flowing forth in valleys and in mountains.
The all-inclusive Christ as the reality of the good land is a land of many kinds of waters – waterbrooks (rivers), springs (the springing up of the wall), and fountains (the well).
The fountain is the source, the spring is the coming out of the well, the fountain, and the waterbrook or river is the flow.
For example, the source of the Jordan River is Mount Hermon; that’s where the fountain is.
Then, this well springs up and flows out, and the River Jordan becomes a large river.
Similarly, God is the living water for us to drink; God the Father is the source as the fountain, God the Son is the springing up as the spring, and God the Spirit is the waterbrooks, the flowing out, the river flowing to reach us.
In Exo. 15:27 we see the children of Israel arriving at Elim, in their journey in the wilderness, and there were twelve springs of water there and seventy palms.
This is a type of God coming out, springing out, for us to drink even in a deserted place. Praise the Lord!
God in eternity is a fountain of water, Christ is the springing up of this water to manifest God and make Him known, and the Spirit is the river flowing out to us for us to drink and be satisfied.
On one hand, God is almighty, for He created all things and sustains all things by the word of His power.
On the other hand, God went through a process to become the springs of salvation for His people to deeply drink of Him, be satisfied, be filled, and flow Him out.
In Isa. 12 we are told that there are many springs of salvation. Wow, salvation has springs!
The source of the springs of salvation is God Himself, who is our salvation.
Isa. 12:2 says that God is now my salvation, and in Him, we trust and not dread.
God is our salvation, and He was embodied in Jesus Christ, who is Jehovah our Savior and our salvation.
Out of God as the fountain springs up the springs of salvation in Jesus Christ, our Savior, and these springs reach us as the Spirit, the flowing river of water of life.
In John 7:38 the Lord Jesus said that, if we drink of Him as the living water, out of our innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.
Not only one river but many rivers will flow out of our innermost being.
The rivers refer to the Spirit; the one Spirit becomes many rivers flowing out of us into others and even into the New Jerusalem, the totality of the eternal life (4:14).
In Rev. 1:4, 4:5, and 5;6 we see that the one Spirit of God has been intensified sevenfold to become the seven Spirits of God.
Today in the age of the degradation of the church we need to come to the Lord and draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation so that the sevenfold intensified life-giving Spirit would flow into our being and fill us to both quench our thirst and quench others’ thist.
Rev. 21:6 says that the Lord will give him who thirsts from the spring of the water of life freely.
In both the Old and the New Testament we see that God is the springs of living water for His people to drink; this living water is God’s practical salvation.
God doesn’t just save us in general but He saves us practically, in our daily life, by our drinking Him as the springs of salvation.
When we drink God in Christ as the Spirit by drawing water with rejoicing out of the springs of salvation, we enjoy God’s practical salvation and our thirst is fully quenched.
Lord Jesus, we come to You to draw water with rejoicing out of the springs of salvation! Hallelujah, God has become the springs of salvation to us, and we can now drink Him as the living water! Amen, Lord, we open to You today. Give us to drink of the living water. We are thirsty. Give us to drink from the spring of the water of life freely. We want to drink the living water and enjoy God’s practical salvation. Keep us drinking of You today. We want to drink deeply of You and be filled with You. May the one river of water of life become many rivers flowing out of our innermost being. Oh, we have rivers of life flowing out of our innermost being! Lord, You are our salvation. We trust in You and are not afraid. We come to You and drink of You, for You are the springs of salvation for us to draw water from. Hallelujah!
Build up the Habit of Drawing Water from the Springs of Salvation to Drink and Flow God
It is not enough for us to know that God is the springs of salvation for us to drink; we need to build up a habit of drawing water from the springs of salvation daily (Isa. 12:3-6; John 7:37-39; Prov. 11:25).
We need to learn how to drink and we need to build up the habit of drinking by drawing water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation in order to drink and flow the water of life.
On His side, God went through a process to become the springs of salvation; on our side, we need to draw water from the springs of salvation.
How do we draw water?
In Num. 21:17 we see that the leaders of Israel were digging a well, and as they were digging, they sang; they dug and sang until the water sprang up.
We need to keep digging until the living water springs up.
Sometimes we feel we are dry, even in our service to the Lord; we feel we are burned out.
We need to realize that we have the fountain of living waters in us, and we can draw water from the springs of salvation!
We need to draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation by speaking to the Lord, by the Lord, for the Lord, in the Lord, and with the Lord (Isa. 12:3-6; Phil. 4:6 -7, 12; cf. Hymns, #255).
One very simple way for us to drink the living water is to speak to the Lord, speak by the Lord, speak for the Lord, and speak with the Lord.
As we speak to the Lord, opening up from deep within to speak to Him, we drink from the springs of salvation.
Then, when we draw water from the springs of salvation, we will also flow Him out.
Speaking to the Lord will cause us to drink, and speaking to others in the Lord will flow Him out to others as living water.
Another practical way for us to draw water from the springs of salvation is by praising the Lord, rejoicing in Him, always giving thanks, and singing to the Lord (1 Thes. 5:16-18; Phil. 4:4; Heb. 13:15; Psa. 119:164; Eph. 5:18-20).
These are some proven ways for us to drink the living water, for us to draw water from the springs of God’s salvation.
We need to build up the habit of drinking from the springs of salvation by praising the Lord.
When we praise the Lord, even though we may not feel like it nor do we have any reason to do so, we drink the living water.
When we rejoice in the Lord and give thanks to Him, thanking Him for all things and in all things, we drink living water from the springs of God’s salvation.
When we sing, when we just take a song and sing with our heart to the Lord, we drink.
We all can testify that, when we’re in the meetings of the church and praise the Lord, sing to Him, and rejoice in Him, we drink the living water.
However, it’s not only in the meetings that we should do this; even in our daily living, we need to build up a habit of drawing water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation by praising the Lord.
Sometimes we’re passing through trials and sufferings, and we may not feel that pleasant or happy about them; in these situations, we can praise the Lord.
We can sing to Him.
We don’t have to try our best to solve the situation or get out of it; we simply need to praise the Lord and drink the living water.
One very simple and enjoyable way for us to drink the living water from the springs of salvation is by calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 2:21; 1 Cor. 12:13, 3; 1 Thes. 5:17; 1 Cor. 1:2; Judg. 15:18-19; Lam . 3:55-56; Hymns, #73).
We may be in the lowest pit as Jeremiah was, but even from there, we can breathe the Lord by calling on His name.
When we call on the name of the Lord, we pour ourselves out and we breathe Him in. Hallelujah!
Even when we’re in depression and in the valley, we can call upon the Lord and drink Him as living water.
As we drink Him as the living water, we will also flow Him out.
We flow the Lord out by preaching the gospel, by making known to others what Christ has accomplished (Rom. 1:16; John 4:32-34; Phil. 2:9; 1 Pet. 2:9).
We drink the Lord, and we flow Him out.
Sometimes we may feel down and out, but if we exercise to speak the gospel to someone, we will spontaneously drink Him as the living water, and we will also flow Him out.
Many times we may be in a low situation and feel depressed; if we exercise to speak the gospel to others, we will drink the living water and there will be a flow of water of life from us into others.
We need to give the Lord the preeminence in our being and do everything according to the divine nature (Rev. 22:1; Col. 1:18b; 2 Pet. 1:4).
May we practice day by day to draw water from the springs of salvation and build up the habit to drink the living water.
Lord Jesus, we want to build up the habit of drawing water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation! Amen, Lord, we want to practice speaking to You, speaking by You, and speaking for You so that we may drink the living water. Praise You, Lord! Praise You for all that You are. Thank You for all that You are to us and for all You have done for us. Lord, we love You, we praise You, and we adore You. We want to sing to You and enjoy Your riches. Keep us calling on Your name so that we may partake of all that You are. Flow into our being. Flow in all the inward parts of our being. Save us from focusing on the situation at hand; keep us calling on Your name to enjoy Your riches and drink the living water! Amen, Lord, we give You the preeminence in all things. We want to do all things according to the divine nature. Oh Lord Jesus, we love You! We want to drink You and practice drinking of You in our daily life!
