As believers in Christ, our emphasis in our Christian life and service is not on outward things such as eating, drinking, behavior, or anything of this kind; our emphasis is on Christ, our mingled spirit, the church life, and the Body of Christ.
If we pay attention to the intrinsic things such as enjoying the Lord, spending time with Him, being saturated with Him through pray-reading His Word, and meeting with the saints to corporately feast on Him, there should be an automatic and spontaneous result: our humanity, our behavior, and our attitude will be uplifted to the point that we are no longer naturally human but Jesusly human, living the same kind of life that He lived on earth.
However, sadly to say, many believers don’t cooperate with the Lord to the point that His humanity is expressed through them; rather, they do their best to improve themselves, be better Christians, and serve God as much as they can, forgetting about the intrinsic matters such as calling on the name of the Lord, pray-reading His word, exercising their spirit, and meeting with the saints to enjoy the Lord.
Both Paul and Peter in their epistles emphasize the intrinsic matter of having Christ as life, following His pattern, allowing Him to make His home in us, and at the same time they mention such things as virtues, praiseworthy, things that are good and well spoken of, forbearance, faithfulness, humility, purity, etc which are part of our humanity.
The only way we can have such a humanity is by eating and drinking Jesus – that is, by exercising our spirit to drink the Spirit and to eat Christ in His word; in the Spirit we have the humanity of Jesus, and as we drink the Spirit, we are constituted with His humanity.
We must enjoy the Spirit of the humanity of Jesus for the church service, for our daily walk, and for the Lord’s recovery. When we enjoy the humanity of Jesus, we become the salt of the earth: we kill and eliminate the earth’s germs of corruption and rottenness because the humanity of Jesus, the basic element of the salt, is in us.
When we take in the humanity of Jesus, we shine as light in the world, and we let our light shine before men to dispel the world’s darkness. The only way we can be the salt of the earth and the light of the world is by eating and drinking Jesus in His humanity through the exercise of our spirit.
5 Main Ways to Enjoy the Humanity of Jesus in our Daily Christian and Church Life
How can we “eat the Lord’s humanity” and “drink the Spirit with the humanity of Jesus”? These are not some “spiritual concepts” that cannot be practiced by us; rather, Paul in his writings clearly gives us at least five main ways for us to enjoy the humanity of Jesus in our daily Christian life.
First of all, the humanity of Jesus is in the Spirit, which Spirit is with our spirit; apart from the Spirit we cannot enjoy the humanity of Jesus. The five main ways to enjoy the humanity of Jesus are:
1. We need to call on the name of the Lord out of a pure heart (2 Tim. 2:22). Whenever we call on the name of the Lord, we are really taking His humanity into us. When we call on the name of the Lord, we breathe Him in as the Spirit; our calling is our spiritual breathing, and when we breathe in the Lord, we breathe in all that He is.
When we call, Oh Lord Jesus! Lord Jesus! we breathe in a Man – the God-man Jesus as the Spirit with all His aromatic virtues and His excellent way of living with all His human virtues. This is a very simple way to enjoy and experience the humanity of Jesus in our daily living.
2. We need to breathe in the word of God by pray-reading the Word of God (2 Tim. 3:16; Eph. 6:17-18). The word of God in the Scriptures is the breathed-out word of God; we as believers need to exercise our spirit to pray over God’s word and prayerfully muse over it to breathe in the essence of God in His word, that is, breathe in the Spirit.
As we read the Bible prayerfully, we need to worship God, converse with Him, speak aloud with Him, taste the Lord and enjoy His word through careful considering. We simply need to enjoy the word of God as His breath through praying the word of God back to Him, and we will be infused with God, we will breathe Him in, and His humanity will be infused into us.
3. We need to practice the Body life, pursuing Christ with the saints (2 Tim. 2:22; Rom. 12:1-3). We need to pursue Christ as righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the name of the Lord out of a pure heart. The saints are those who call on the name of the Lord, so we need to pursue the Lord not merely by ourselves but corporately.
When we come together with companions, in vital groups, home meetings, group meetings, and church meetings, we should pursue the Lord with the saints, being built up together and enjoying the Lord’s humanity corporately.
4. We need to exercise our spirit (1 Tim. 4:7). The humanity of Jesus is in the Spirit, who is today with our spirit; we can eat the Lord’s humanity and drink the Spirit with the humanity of Jesus when we exercise our mingled spirit. God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but a spirit of power and of love and of sober-mindedness (2 Tim. 1:7).
When we are by ourselves, we need to exercise our spirit; when we are with the saints, we need to exercise our spirit; when we are among other people, we need to exercise our spirit. No matter what, no matter where, no matter what time is it, we need to exercise our spirit to enjoy the Lord’s humanity!
5. We need to experience the Lord’s being with our spirit to have the presence of grace (1 Tim. 4:22; Gal. 6:18). The Lord is with our spirit: grace is with us! The Lord as wonderful person is not just in the heavens: He is the Spirit mingled with our spirit, so available, rich, and wonderful for us to enjoy as grace.
When we realize that the Lord is with us wherever we are, we will learn to enjoy Him more by exercising our spirit, and He as grace will be everything we need in our spirit.
We need to daily practice these five main ways to enjoy the Lord’s humanity by calling on the Lord, breathing Him in by pray-reading His word, having the Body life, exercising our spirit, and realizing the Lord Jesus within our spirit as grace.
The Lord Jesus, who is the real humanity, is today in our spirit; by exercising our spirit to call on His name and pray-read His word to breathe Him both personally and corporately, we simply enjoy His humanity!
Lord Jesus, we want to enjoy Your humanity in a simple way by calling on Your name, pray-reading the word, and exercising our spirit by ourselves and with the saints in the Body! Amen, Lord, we want to pursue You together with those who call on Your name out of pure heart! Keep us exercising our spirit to touch You by calling on Your name, breathing You in through Your word, and meeting with the saints to enjoy the wonderful Jesus Christ as the Spirit with our spirit!
Do we need to Do something to have the Lord’s Humanity, or is it ours Automatically?
At the conclusion of this week on, The Humanity of the One who Serves the Lord, our realization is clearly that in ourselves we do not possess the humanity that is qualified to serve the Lord; rather, in ourselves we are fallen, rotten, and not the right persons to serve the Lord.
Christ’s humanity is so high, aromatic, and wonderful, but our humanity is low, natural, and not really great. However, we can have the humanity of Jesus by drinking the Spirit (who contains the Lord’s humanity) and by breathing in the Lord in His word.
The question is: this humanity, these excellent virtues needed for serving the Lord, do they automatically come to us when we enjoy the Lord or do we need to do something? Do we need to just enjoy the Lord and we will spontaneously have His humanity, or do we also need to do something about it?
The answer lies in the middle: we need to do both. On the one hand, we will never possess this humanity APART from the Lord; the humanity needed for serving God is in the Lord, so our only way is to take in this Christ, assimilate Him, and we will live Him out.
There’s NO kind of reformation, rehabilitation, or self-help to get us anywhere; we simply need to take the Lord in and we will be constituted with His humanity.
On the other hand, however, the word of God is full of the side of our cooperation. Yes, we need to enjoy the Spirit, but there’s such a thing as the fruits of the Spirit such as, love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, self-control (Gal. 5:22-23).
Yes, we need to enjoy the Lord as the Spirit with the humanity of Jesus, but at the same time we need to take account of things that are true, dignified, righteous, pure, lovely, well-spoken of, virtue, and praise (Phil. 4:8); Paul himself was a pattern of these things, as he testified in the next verse.
If we read 1 Tim. 2-3 we see a lot of things regarding our human living and humanity such as praying for those in authority, having no wrath or reasoning, women having godly reverence and not teaching, and having certain qualifications for being an overseer or deacon.
We need to drink in the Spirit and enjoy Christ in His word, but at the same time we need to be temperate, of a sober mind, healthy in faith, loving our children and spouse, pure, a pattern of good works, having a healthy speech, being subject to our boss/master, not pilfering but showing all good faithfulness, etc (see Titus 2).
Lastly, as Peter encourages us in 2 Pet. 1:5-7, we need to add all diligence and supply bountifully in our faith virtue, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly love, and love, so that these things would exist and abound in us to constitute us neither idle nor unfruitful unto the full knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
On the one hand, we need to enjoy the Lord, and on the other, take account of these things and cooperate with the Lord for His humanity to be manifested in us. Amen!
We need to pray for the entire situation of the Lord’s recovery so that all the brothers and sisters in the local churches may have a full enjoyment of the humanity of Jesus!
Lord Jesus, thank You we can enjoy Your humanity through the exercise of our spirit to pray-read the Word of God and drink the Spirit. O Lord Jesus, we love to call on Your name, breathe You in as the Spirit, and have Your humanity constituted into our being. Amen! We want to cooperate with You, Lord, by not only enjoying You but also taking account of the things that are true dignified, righteous, pure, lovely, well-spoken of, and praiseworthy. Gain our cooperation in full until You live in us and we live out the humanity of Jesus in our daily living and service to God!

# Exercise the spirit! / Human thought reject; / Meet with one another, / Body life respect. / Exercise the spirit! / All the forms forsake; / Share with one another, / Each of Christ partake. (Hymns #866)
We have these five matters to practice: calling on the Lord, breathing in the Scriptures, having the Body life, exercising our spirit, and realizing the Lord Jesus within our spirit. This reveals the concept of the apostle Paul. We can enjoy the humanity of Jesus simply by these five things. We have to call on the Lord, we must breathe in the Word, and we must do these things in a Body way in the church life. For this we have such a strengthening factor in our spirit. The Lord Jesus, who is the real humanity, is in our spirit. By exercising our spirit to call on Him and to breathe in the Word in a corporate way, we simply enjoy His humanity. Amen … “Gain our cooperation in full until You live in us and we live out the humanity of Jesus in our daily living and service to God!” … Amen
