being a Christian student on the campus: seeing our studying in the light of God’s economy

being a Christian student on the campus: seeing our studying in the light of God's economyRecently I have been pondering on the matter of a healthy balance of studying whilst maintaining my enjoyment and love for the Lord. I am still in the process of learning and experiencing living this healthy life but here are some insights into this daily life.

We as Christian students on the campus need to see our studying in the light of God’s Economy. Now you may ask, what do you mean by this statement? We can break this into two parts.

Firstly: why do we need to study?

When the Lord brought the children of Israel into the good land, they all had to do work on the land. That was their duty. Whether or not the good land produced a good harvest depended on a number of things: the weather, the sunshine, the proper amount of rain, and the right temperature.

None of these was under the control of the children of Israel, so it was God who caused the growth. Their responsibility was just to labour on the land. To do their duty was right and necessary – but to be anxious is wrong.

This working on the land is like us finishing our degree. Our peers and classmates study because they are anxious as to what the future holds. To be living the kingdom life is to be without anxiety.

We need to see the light in regards to our study. Our study is our duty, allowing us to become more useful to the Lord. How does our studying make us more useful?

The more we develop and train our mind in our youth, the easier it is to understand the truths revealed in the Bible. This is the solid foundation needed for our growth. If we would not have this solid foundation, greater time will be needed to experience Christ in all that He is! Our experience in university can pave the way for the enlightenment of the truth.

Secondly: loving and enjoying the Lord

Now I would like to cover my second feeling – above I talked about the need to study, but now we need to talk about loving and enjoying the Lord. Maybe I should have started with this matter as I feel this is more important for us as students to understand. Our degree is pointless and worthless if we lose our love for the Lord during our studies. Sometimes we can become blinded by our ambition and lose our vision of the Lord’s move.

In Matthew 6:24 the Lord says “You cannot serve God and mammon.” Mammon is usually associated with wealth and riches, but as students our “mammon” can become our education. We know that all things work together for good to those who love God and live according to His purpose (Rom. 8:29). Therefore we should not be anxious but diligent to study and not neglect our love of the Lord Jesus.
